What We Water Grows

There was a time when I saw the world very differently, and I don't mean that in a good way.
I was becoming negative, and to be completely honest, my attitude sucked.
It's funny how much we continue to learn and grow as we get older. Looking back now, I think I had reached a point where I was simply tired. Tired of carrying so much negativity around with me. Tired of feeling like every day was just another list of frustrations.
Then one day, I decided to test something I had heard countless times.
People always say, "What you focus on grows," or "What you focus on becomes your reality."
I wasn't sure I believed it, but I figured I had nothing to lose by trying.
So I made myself a promise.
No matter how my day went, I was going to intentionally look for something good. It didn't have to be life changing. In fact, most days it wasn't.
Some days it was as simple as hearing the birds outside my window that morning. Other days it was the smell of a fresh cup of coffee or the warmth of the sun on my face. Sometimes it was a stranger smiling at me or someone holding the door open. I started paying attention to all the little things I had been overlooking because I had become so focused on everything that was going wrong.
At first, it felt forced.
Some days it was genuinely difficult to find anything positive. But I kept doing it anyway.
Over time, something unexpected happened.
The more I looked for good, the more I noticed it. The world hadn't suddenly become a better place. My circumstances hadn't magically changed. What changed was where I was placing my attention.
Eventually, it became a habit.
Then it became part of who I was.
Somewhere along the way, I became this happy-go-lucky person that I barely recognized. Not because life became easier, but because I had trained myself to notice the beauty that had been there all along.
That doesn't mean I ignore hard things or pretend life is perfect. There are still difficult days. There are still moments of grief, frustration, and disappointment. But they no longer define every moment because I've learned they don't deserve all of my attention.
I truly believe what we choose to nurture begins to shape us.
If we constantly water anger, resentment, fear, or comparison, those things grow. If we intentionally water gratitude, kindness, hope, and joy, those begin to grow too.
The garden doesn't change overnight. Neither do we.
But little by little, what we choose to water becomes the life we're living.

A Moment to Reflect
The world offers us countless things to notice every day. Some bring frustration, while others quietly remind us there is still beauty, kindness, and hope. We may not always choose what happens to us, but we often have more influence over what we continue to nurture within ourselves than we realize.
What have you been watering lately, and is it growing into the life you hope to cultivate?
