When Rain Is Enough

It rained today, and that probably does not sound particularly noteworthy, but it has been a very, very long time since we have had real rain. Long enough that I had almost forgotten how much I love it. Then I heard that familiar sound against the roof and the windows, and for a moment, I stopped what I was doing just to listen.
There is something about the sound of rain that I have always loved. It somehow makes everything feel quieter even though, technically, the world just got noisier. Then there is the smell. If you love rain, you know exactly what I am talking about. That earthy smell that rises from the ground when rain finally hits dry dirt. I do not know why I love it so much, but I do. After going so long without rain, I found myself standing there for a moment just breathing it in and enjoying it.
Nothing profound happened. I did not have some life-changing realization while staring dramatically out the window. It was just raining, and I was happy.

It got me thinking about how many little things like that exist in our lives. Things we barely acknowledge because they happen in the middle of everything else. The first sip of coffee in the morning, crawling into bed with freshly washed sheets, hearing a bird outside your window, finding money in a pocket you forgot about, or smelling something good cooking when you walk into the house. Even the ridiculous excitement of a dog acting like you have returned from war when you were only gone for twenty minutes. They are tiny, ordinary things that will probably never make a list of life's greatest moments, but somehow they make life a little better.
I think we spend a lot of time looking forward to the big things. Vacations, holidays, milestones, celebrations, and those experiences we know we will remember for years. Those things are wonderful, and I hope we all get as many of them as possible. But the truth is, most of our lives are not made up of extraordinary moments. Most Tuesday afternoons are not going to change our lives.
Most days are made up of work and laundry, coffee and errands, conversations, pets underfoot, dinner, dishes, traffic, weather, laughter, irritation, and a hundred tiny moments we probably will not remember a year from now. Maybe that is exactly why the little things deserve more of our attention. They are not interruptions between the important parts of life. They are a huge part of life.
I do not think we need to turn every small moment into something profound, either. Sometimes rain can just be rain. We can simp
ly enjoy something because it feels good, smells good, makes us laugh, or reminds us for a few minutes that there is a lot to enjoy in an otherwise ordinary day.
Today, after what felt like forever without it, I heard the rain falling outside. I smelled the wet earth, stopped what I was doing for a minute, and remembered how much I love something as simple as rain.
A Moment to Reflect
What is one little thing that makes you unexpectedly happy? Not the big things you are supposed to be grateful for, but something small and ordinary that you might not even think to mention if someone asked what brings you joy.
Maybe it is rain. Maybe it is fresh sheets, the smell of coffee, a certain song coming on the radio, or hearing someone you love laugh from another room.
Whatever your little thing is, the next time it happens, I hope you notice it.
